EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a procedure used in psycho-therapy to help you work on the present-day impact of experiences from the past that intrude into your life. It is especially good for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety and low self-esteem.

In this process you will be asked to bring to mind a picture of the experience that is bothering you along with the negative self-thoughts, the emotions and the physical sensations it creates. Whilst focusing on these, you will be guided to move your eyes in a specific way. Other thoughts, feelings, pictures, memories or sensations come up which are in turn processed. This process is followed until the negative feelings and thoughts subside before new, more positive feelings and thoughts are "installed" to replace the negative ones.

Sometimes people prefer auditor or kinesthetic (tapping on the knees or the hands) processing in place of eye processing. The therapist can adapt to come up with whatever works best for you so that you get the results you want.
