Dance Movement Therapy

The use of dance as a healing art is an ancient tradition. Today dance movement therapy combines movement and dance with modern psychotherapy methods as a tool for self-awareness and change. Its approach is based on the premise of the inter-connectedness of the body, mind and emotions, and how this is expressed though bodily movement. It can be used to explore feelings that are difficult to talk about or to work through experiences towards greater integration.

Dance movement therapy is offered through an on-going group or individual sessions. A session lasts approximately 60 minutes and is carried out in a safe and confidential environment. The therapist supports clients to initiate and explore movement expression by moving, playing, interacting and reflecting in creative and spontaneous ways. During a session the therapist may draw on a variety of techniques including movement, gesture, rhythm, metaphor or imagery as well as using music and a range of props.

Dance movement therapy is suitable for those wishing to explore their potential creatively for self-development and growth, or individuals who are experiencing emotional distress or difficulties in adapting to life situations. It can also be used with patients in mental health and palliative care settings as a complement to their on-going treatment.
